After something like 5 years I'm sad to announce my intentions to shut down the
Building Instructions Portal (www.bricksonthebrain.com/instructions).

Years ago when i first created the site I was a code newbie (although some may
argue that I'm STILL a newbie, back then I was a massive newbie), and to say
that the code was...uh... problematic was putting it lightly.

Over the years I had always intended to rewrite the site in order to improve
stability. With the birth of my new daughter and my new business, my free time
has become nearly zilch. As such, I find myself in a quandary.

On the one hand, I love the BIP and want to see it live on forever. But on the
other hand, I know full well that I'll not be rewriting the code anytime soon
and that there are major stability problems with the current site that are
causing problems for the rest of the sites hosted on the same server.

While posting of new content has slowed lately, the usage of the site is still
fairly strong with several thousand page views a day and several hundred unique
visitors a day.

I'd like to throw out a call for help. If you're a coder in search of a fun
project, please drop me a line. I'd love to be able to turn over the site to
someone who has the mad skillz as well as the time to create a truly timeless
BIP mk.2.

I'm willing (with a few requirements) to turn over the site (code, domain name,
design) completely to anyone who knows ColdFusion (which is what the site is
programmed in), or to do a data export only if you'd rather code a new site in
another language. If you have other ideas for how to save BIP, I'm all ears!

If there aren't any takers, I'll likely have to shut the site down completely as
some point in the near future. No solid plans on that yet - I'm hoping there'll
be a BIP savior among us.

Hallo an alle,

leider muss ich euch mitteilen, dass ich beschlossen habe, das Building Instructions Portal (www.bricksonthebrain.com/instructions) vom Netz zu nehmen.

Als ich die Site vor ein paar Jahren entworfen habe, war ich im programmieren ein ziemlicher Anfänger. Okay, manche behaupten, ich wäre das heute noch, aber dann war ich halt damals ein blutiger Anfänger. Und die Programmierung war gelinde gesagt nicht ganz einfach.

In den letzten Jahren hatte ich eigentlich regelmäßig vor, die Seite neu zu programmieren, vor allem um sie zuverlässiger zu machen. Aber die Geburt meiner Tochter und mein neuer Job ließen mir keine Zeit dazu. Das ist das Dilemma.

Einerseits hänge ich am Building Instructions Portal und hätte es am liebsten bis in alle Ewigkeit im Netz. Andererseits ist mir völlig klar, dass ich sie in nächster Zeit garantiert nicht neu programmieren werde. Das wäre aber dringend nötig, da es massive technische Probleme gibt. Probleme, die sich auch auf Websites auswirken, mit denen sich BIP den Server teilt.

Mangelndes Publikumsinteresse ist jedenfalls nicht der Grund: Zwar wurde der Nachschub für die Site kontinuierlich weniger, aber die Besucherzahlen sind immer noch beachtlich: mit mehreren tausend Seitenaufrufen pro Tag und mehreren hundert neuen Besuchern am Tag.

Es wäre also schade drum. Deshalb starte ich hier mal einen Hilferuf: Wenn es hier Programmierer gibt, die das aus Spaß an der Sache machen würden, sollen sie sich bitte bei mir melden. Ich würde die Site liebend gern jemandem vermachen, der genug Programmiererfahrung und vor allem genug Zeit hat, um ein "BIP reloaded" online zu bringen.

Unter einigen kleinen Bedingungen wäre ich bereit, die komplette Site (Quellcode, URL und Design) an jemanden weiterzugeben, der die Site in ColdFusion weiterführen kann oder sie komplett neu programmieren will. Und wenn jemand noch eine ganz andere Idee hat, um die Site zu retten – ich bin für alles offen.

Falls sich niemand findet, werde ich die Site irgendwann in den nächsten Monaten vom Netz nehmen. Einen genauen Termin gibt es noch nicht – letztendlich hoffe ich, dass sich doch noch ein Retter findet.

also an der Programmierung soll es nicht liegen (das bekomme ich hin). Die Frage ist eher der Server auf dem das Ganze dann laufen soll. Ich finde die Geschwindigkeit von peeron teilweise... oft... sehr oft... grausam.

Wenn also jemand einen entsprechenden Server hat, dann kann man nochmal darüber reden, ob man etwas macht.

Die Seite www.bricksonthebrain.com/instructions sagt mir irgendwie garnichts? Wahrscheinlich habe ich gerade einen kleinen Blackout

mit einem Server kann ich dienen. Auf diesem läuft allerdings Suse 10.x, so dass ColdFusion wohl ausfällt.

Ich habe aber kein Problem damit, ein CMS auf PHP-/MySQL-Basis zu installieren, um die Site-Übernahme einfacher zu gestalten.

Für die URL müssten wir dann noch einen KK-Antrag stellen, sofern Jake dies möchte. Ansonsten denken wir uns einfach eine neue aus...

das hört sich doch schonmal gut an. Vielleicht aber sollten wir erstmal eine kleine Umfrage starten, ob sich das überhaupt lohnt, also ob Leute daran wirklich interessiert sind. Was meinst du?

Zur Not kann man auch selber was stricken: wäre halt schön, die alten Daten und besonders die Domain zu erhalten.

Hallo Dan,

das BIP hat nichts mit Peeron zu tun. Dort konnte man Links zu Bauanleitungen von Mocs posten. Unter anderem gab es Links zu Mocs von Ben Beneke, James Mathis, usw. unterteilt in verschiedene Rubriken wie Eisenbahn, Stadt, Burg, usw.
