Lila Hp-Busse die (das) Letzte

Hallo LLL,

Juni 2004 16:46:11:

Dirk

Hello Dirk

Tormod (...) has passed on your letter to me regarding LEGO Quality Issues.

First of all, we would like to say that we are very sorry to hear about your disappointment with our products. Our aim at the LEGO Company is to exceed customer expectations with regard to our products, service and their experience of the LEGO brand and please let me reassure you that we do take the consumer feedback we get seriously.

Below I hope to be able to give you an explanation to the issues you mention, which will make you regain your faith in our products.

Our quality department has now had a chance to examine the bricks returned by you and our stress calculations have shown that the ABS material used for these bricks are under too much strain. This is due to the inner measurements of the brick being produced to the limit of our specified tolerances. In order to avoid this in future a decision has been made to increase the inner measurements of all bricks, as this will reduce the strain of the material. I will ask our consumer service to send you a replacement for the defective parts.

Regarding the colour change, we are aware of the reactions from AFOLs. Please, see below information regarding the colour change. The colours have been changed in order to express more joy and excitement, to give a lift and a more clean expression. Our colour technicians have worked intensively with the colour project in order to find new colours that match the trend of today.

Below is some official information issued by LEGO Company regarding the colour change:

LEGO fans miss the old grey bricks

During the last couple of months adult LEGO fans have expressed their interest about the brick colour change, which has been implemented in the 2004 products.

On LUGNET.com many of the fans have joined the debate and although the new colours have both supporters and opponents among the LEGO fans, the general opinion on LUGNET.com is that the fans miss the old grey colours.

Many fans do not think that the new colours match the old colours they have been collecting for years and they would prefer to have both the new and the old colours.

”We have been aware of the reactions on LUGNET. We have implemented the new colours to give better support to the LEGO brand and the basic LEGO colours and I am sure that the new colours will appeal to the consumers in general,” says Design Manager Dorthe Kjærulff. She has been working on the colour change based on an Executive Office decision for more than two years.
She adds that even though she acknowledges the concern shown by the LEGO fans, it has not been possible to take all consumer reactions into consideration when planning these kinds of changes. The new colours have been tested with very positive results among families in Germany and USA, before the final decision about the colour change was made.

She also adds that it would be very expensive for LEGO Company to have both the old and the new grey colours in the element assortment”.

Regarding varying colour from brick to brick in the same set we we would like to stress that the colour variance of the bricks is within our specified tolerances. We realize that many LEGO enthusiasts consider this bad quality, but to our core consumers, who for the Harry Potter bus are boys and girls aged 7-12 the play experience is in focus. The fact that the colour variation does not play an important role to children is also reflected in the consumer feed back that our Consumer Service department has captured regarding the bus so far.

We find it important to note that the colour deviation is not an error as it is still within our specifications, but with both the Harry Potter bus and the Ferrari items we have been dealing with sensitive colours regarding visibility of deviations.

1. The purple color is extremely difficult to manage from a production perspective and at the same time a new colour to the color palette of LEGO Company.

2. For the production of the launch quantity LEGO Company used 2 different suppliers of raw material that produces the raw material in two different ways – pre-colored and compounded. Some of the color changes might occur due to these deliveries.

3. The purple and the red color changes significantly dependent on which type of light it is seen in. In bright daylight the variance is much less than in e.g. office neon light.

4. In the bus opposite to most other LEGO models the same color is used on a relatively large flat surface which makes the color variance even more visible to the human eye.

Based on the above, we have decided to use a raw material for future production for which the colour tolerance is considerably narrower than what we usually require from our raw materials.

Regarding the idea book principle for the Make & Create product lines; Creator and Designer sets which was introduced in 2003, we have taken the consumer feedback into account and changed the marking on the packaging, so that on all new sets there will be an indication on the packaging stating the number of step-by-step instructions and the number of ideas for other creations, for which there are no step-by-step instruction.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me again, should you have further questions.

Med venlig hilsen / Kind regards

L.S. (Name mir bekannt - Dirk)

Harald

Also ca. 5 Jahre Entwicklungszeit waren durchaus üblich.

Uwe
